🔔 Important: In order to create a retargeting audience you must have the Dataset (or Pixel) installed on your website and tracking all relevant events.

Building Website Visitors Audience

  1. Go to All Tools

  2. Click Audiences

  3. Click Create a Custom Audience

  4. Select Website

  5. Click Next

  6. Ensure the correct pixel is selected as the source.

  7. Events leave set to All Website Visitors (unless you want other parameters)

  8. Set your # of days in the Retention field
    🔔 Important
    Different businesses require different number of days. In general, the higher the cost the more days you’ll want to include here. Some standards are the following:

    • 10 Days is good for most ecommerce brands where goods are sub $250

    • 30 days is the average for most lead gen business

    • 90 days is great for B2B businesses

  9. Name the audience Website Visitors (# of Days)

  10. Click Create Audience

🎉 Your retargeting audience is built, next let's build a Purchasers audience so we can exclude anyone who has converted from seeing our ads again.

Building Purchasers Audience

  1. Go back to Audiences & create a new audience

  2. This time we’ll set the Event to purchase or lead (depending on your business).

  3. For this example, we’ll do Lead

  4. Set your # of days in the Retention field
    🔔 Important
    Different businesses require different number of days they want to exclude. In general, you should have an idea of the cadence someone orders from your business and exclude the difference.

    • 14 Days is good for most ecommerce brands

    • 30 days is good for subscription services or services that renew

    • 180 days (max) is typical for lead generation campaigns

  5. Name the audience Purchasers (# of Days)

  6. Click Create Audience

Creating the Campaign

  1. Head over to your ad account → https://adsmanager.facebook.com/adsmanager

  2. Create a new campaign

  3. Select Sales for ecommerce brands or select Leads for lead generation campaigns

    You can also test the awareness objective with these audiences and get some results for a fraction of the cost

  4. Name your campaign whatever you deem fit → 03. BOF | Leads | ABO

  5. In the Ad Set is where we’ll set our audience.

  6. Scroll down to where you see Custom audiences

  7. Here you’ll select your Website Visitors (# of Days)

  8. Than Exclude your Purchasers (# of Days)

🎉 Your retargeting campaign is built, finish setting up budgets, placements, and ads. You are ready to launch!
